WHY STUDY FOR A BACHELOR OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE?
Degrees that combine economy and foreign languages? Some might find it a rather strange combination of studies. Well in this modern global economic environment, it is not. On the contrary, it is a great combination if you want to work in international trade. By the end of your studies, you will know what the field of business is like across borders and how to deal with different business cultures. That will make you very popular on the international job market.
The International Business program is a broad economic study. The universities offering International Business train generalists for various positions. You may find yourself in sales, export, marketing or managerial positions, both at home and other countries. In this university study programme, you learn to look at the world of trade and business through different lenses. As an undergraduate you can expect politics, economics, finance, marketing, management, history, culture and language to be the subjects that are covered during the three-year bachelor’s programs. You deal with trade contacts on a micro level but also practice macro-economic developments. You look at international issues from a business perspective: How can you launch Western products on the Asian market? How does a financial crisis unfold? How do you establish a business opportunity for companies from Europe in South America? The difference with International Business studies is that you look at international trade more from a theoretical point of view. Moreover, the university bachelor prepares you to do scientific research.
Are you going to make a career after your studies or continue with a Master of Business Administration? The choice is yours. If you opt for a job, the international business world is an option. Graduates can think of a position as a planner, export manager, sales manager, consultant, supply chain management, business leader or account manager.
The first year of International Business starts with a business foundation, including marketing, business administration, economics, project management and communication. At most universities of applied sciences offering International Business, you also get to work on projects and/or set up your own company with fellow students. And don’t forget… you get to learn foreign languages. Subjects such as organisational studies, planning and law are also included in your curriculum. Naturally, you will also learn all about other (business) cultures.
The second half of your studies usually focuses on an international stay. Most universities of applied sciences have good contacts abroad and therefore you can easily do an internship, your graduation assignment or a minor there. Optional subjects will give you more direction in your career. Alumni can for example choose financial management, logistics, business strategy or marketing & sales as a part of the path to students’ degrees.
WHO ARE INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS STUDIES FOR?
Subjects such as economics, management and organisation and English are useful for your studies. The study is taught entirely in English and a study period abroad is a fixed part of the programme. Themes covered in the bachelor include conflict management, international (trade) law, communication, taxation, business analysis and globalisation.
During the study, attention is also paid to developing your communication and leadership skills. From the second year onwards, you choose a specialisation. Are you a born manager? Do you like figures, working together and finding solutions to complex problems? And do you think the world is your playground? Then International Business might be the study for you.
